Welcome to Austin’s Book Club (ABC)

Mission: Austin’s Book Club is dedicated to providing parents and children at The Toledo Children’s Hospital neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) with new children’s books for parents to read to their child and take home with them.

It is our goal for Austin’s legacy to continue on through the power of literature. We very much enjoyed reading to Austin during his 36 weeks in-utero and he made sure to let us know which books were his favorites (Chicka Chicka Boom Boomwith all of his punches and kicks during story time. This inspired us to create Austin’s Book Club (ABC). We want every parent to experience the joy of reading to their child because that is the most normal thing a parent can do at that time. Thanks to ABC, each of the 48 rooms in The Toledo Hospital NICU has books available for parents to read to their children. In addition, upon release from the hospital when children are well enough to go home, they will be able to take a book home with them. To continue our goal we need your help. Visit our “Donate” page to find out ways you can contribute.

  1. I’m blessed to have an 11 yr daughter. She will being having major back surgery in June 2016. I was trying to think of way to do “something” for the hospital that would be taking care of my baby girl soon. My late mom, my best friend, was a librarian. Giving to Austin’s Book Club will be the absolutely best “something” I could do. I’m so sorry for your loss. Thank you for your gift of love and life in Austin. Hugs.

  2. Our granddaughter, Claire, was in the NICU at the same time that Austin was there. She was born with a rare heart condition and stayed for 28 days. Claire still struggles with this condition but she is a strong and happy little girl. When I read Austin’s obituary in the paper it broke my heart. I have also lost a child and know that pain. Your positive outlook will be a blessing to so many families.

  3. Hi Brittany and Heather,
First of all, this is such a beautiful way to remember your son. I’m sure so many NICU parents appreciate this!I have been thinking about starting a similar program for the hospital where my son spent 121 days. I would love to talk to you more about how you organize and execute this project. If you are able, please e-mail me at rebecca.coyer@gmail.com. Thank you!!!
